Where To Stay In Riga

Riga offers a very wide range of accommodation thanks to a recent boom in hotel building but, although it appears like a new hotel opens every week, there still don’t seem enough rooms to go around. Unless you have booked you will struggle to find a decent room over the summer.

You can stay in one of the ever-growing numbers of luxury Riga hotels, usually sited in the Old City or there are some very good budget hotel options in the New City on the other side of the river, though most of these tend to lack character. Fortunately, Riga is a small enough city for it not to much matter too much where your hotel accommodation is sited. Most hotels and apartments are on, or near, regular tram routes which make getting into the center cheap and easy.

A good alternative to central Riga in the summer is a hotel or apartment at the nearby beach resort of Jurmala, about 20min from Riga by car and 30min by train. Jurmala is an attractive seaside beach resort strip in its own right with plenty of recently restored and several new hotels to choose from, many with splendid views over the Gulf of Riga.

Luxury Hotels in Riga

There are scores of the top-end hotel in Riga with all the luxury extras you could expect. Most are centered in the Old City and near all the top city sites and shopping areas.

Grand Palace Hotel: Near the Dome Cathedral, this opened in 2001 and is the most expensive. The rooms are Ls130 – Ls370. It has a fitness suite, two restaurants

Hotel de Rome: German-owned four-star on the edge of the Old Town has 90 rooms from Ls90 with a fine restaurant.

Guttenbergs: In the heart of the Old Town with a stunning rooftop restaurant and rich 19th-century décor.

Mid-Range Hotels in Riga

There are plenty of mid-range hotels to be found in Riga, most of them a short ride away from the old center, though most will be found across the river in the New City.

Radi un Draugi: British-Latvian-owned in the Old Town and very popular with consistently good reviews. Comfortable with 76 rooms and recently modernized.

Hotel Tia: Clean and comfortable, simple rooms recently renovated and near the center.

Laine Hotel: the Small hotel has just 28 rooms in an elegant art nouveau building near the town center. They have a few cheaper rooms with shared bathrooms.

Keizermezs: Overlooks Lake Kisezers, 7km north of the center, with 80 rooms with fabulous fitness center and swimming pool.

Budget Hotels in Riga

Those traveling on a tight budget don’t have a great deal of choice in Riga. Cheaper hotels have been bulldozed to make way for more up-market accommodation recently. There are only four hostels offering dormitory-type accommodation and a few cheaper range apartments.

Old Town Hostel: Close to the bus station with baggage storage, a sauna, and bar

Posh Backpackers: Near the Central Market, this has some spacious rooms as well as dormitories but no kitchens.

Riga Hostel: This quite a way out of town on the 11 or 22 tram route.

Turiba: This is on a business school campus about 20min out of town on tram 8 to Graudu.

There is also Campsite ABC at Sampetera, about 6km south of the center with tents and cabins and Riga City Camping at Kipsala, about 20min walk from the center, with 63 tent plots and 20 trailer spaces.
